Building the Magnum Opus

It feels strange. After nearly 4 years this crazy ambitious project is finally coming together. I’ve had to learn a lot. I’ve had to learn how to code in Godot. I’ve had to relearn HTML. I am currently learning what backend development looks like and let me tell you, I am real happy that isn’t my job.

I don’t learn easily. I learn quickly. There is a difference. Those that learn easy learn all they need to know and are able to recall information at a request. Those that learn quickly learn what they are supposed to do and how to do it and then they just do that. Programming isn’t really geared towards the fast learners.

Actually, let me walk that back. Everyone is different. I’m sure there are easy learners that struggle with retention and fast learners that could walk circles around me.

I have a habit of burning out quickly. Picking up something and working on a project only to hit a wall and walk away. The Magnum Opus has always been different though. I’d hit a wall, go do something else for a few months, come back to it and then make more progress than I ever did before.

As of this moment I am assembling the webpages that will, hopefully, help you (yes, you!) see the vision. See the shape of the Oververse and what this project will be. I have been putting together small demos, teasers and simulations to help paint the picture of what the Gamebook will look like. As of now I have the pre-alpha of Brigid Station up (with some small UI issues that I promise will be fixed before the full launch). I have assembled a quick example of the dialogue system and how Discordance will be tracked and monitored. By the time you finish reading this I’ll even have a demo of the Navigation Console ready.

The Backend stuff is unfortunately a ways out. Maybe another year or two. I could speed this up if I used AI to handle the coding, or at least troubleshoot my code but I’ve already waited this long…

What’s another 4 years? Doubt I’ll die tonight…
