For me, painting is akin to sculpting. I start with a flat image and by layering colors of different values, I shape a scene.

I study lighting and its effects on materials both stationary and in motion. Through those studies you can learn a lot about lighting and how to portray it in art. Light doesn’t brighten areas, it alters the hue of the surface the light is on. Shadows don’t just darken, they change the colors of objects they are cast over.

There is no such thing as bad art. Art is and will always be subjective. To view it objectivily is to live without whimsy.
